“Obediene” Part 3
Read: Matthew 3:13-15
But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?”
Matthew 3:14
Ever been asked to do something completely out of your comfort zone? It’s a funny thing when you are put on the spot and the only answer you can give is either yes or no. As human beings, we do not like to feel constrained in any way. However, sometimes life will teach us that it’s in our best interest to surrender our autonomy.
In chapter 3 of the book of Matthew, we are given a background as to how the baptism of Jesus occurred. After travelling from Galilee, He comes to the Jordan to be baptized by John. It appears that John is a little hesitant and almost reluctant to go forward with baptizing Jesus. However, once Jesus confirms that this is the right course of action, John proceeds in obedience.
From this passage, we can learn three things about obedience:
- Obedience teaches us that life is not about us. In this story, John responded to Jesus by emphasizing that he should be the one who should be baptized by Jesus. But, as we learn later, that moment wasn’t about whether or not John should be baptized by Jesus or about whether John was qualified to baptize. The only thing that mattered was that Jesus would proceed with what was required of Him and that John would help Him in doing so. As you strive to be obedient, remember that obedience is not self-centered, but rather God-centered, and necessary for fulfilling God’s will.

2. Obedience is a choice – even when we are thrust into situations which call for our obedience. John was presented with the task of baptizing Jesus. He could’ve consented or he could’ve declined. Either way, he had to choose to follow through on the plan of God from beginning to end. We must remember that with God, partial obedience is total disobedience. If you’re going to be like John and obey God, you’ve got to be all in. Giving Jesus his YES is what led to righteousness being fulfilled.
3. Obedience will cause us to do some unconventional things. Obedience may commission you to skip some steps and do what seems irrational. The most important thing is that you have the voice of the Lord leading and directing you. John knew it was the voice of the Lord because Jesus Himself, in the flesh reassured Him and affirmed their exchange. Whenever you are unsure if you are acting in obedience to God, remember that you can hear from Him. Position yourself to hear from Him. Get in His face. Then, proceed with whatever He says.
Reflection:
Partial obedience is total disobedience. Have you ever tried to partially obey God so that you could do things your way?
Prayer: Father God, I thank You for allowing me to hear Your voice whenever I need confirmation. God, I resolve to be obedient despite the reservations I have. I pray God, that all of my doubts and hesitations will be overcome even as I surrender in obedience. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
