January 5th – “Remember”

“I will remember the works of the Lord; surely I will remember Your wonders of old.” Psalm 77:11

Remember in prayer you are approaching God. Remind God of His greatness and what He has already done, especially of what He has done in the past for you.

God is always the focus of prayer.  Prayer should never be a need-centered conversation but should always be pre-occupied with God, focusing on His nature and His actions.  Remind Him of His actions in your life.

Personalize your prayer.  Some prayers, only you can pray because what God did, He did only for you.  That’s partly why you can’t always be prayed for; because only you can tell Him in your own special, personal way, the things that He has done for you.

Many times, in His dealings with the children of Israel, God refers to Himself along these lines: “I am the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 20:2, Exodus 29:46, Leviticus 11:45, Leviticus 19:36, Leviticus 22:33, Leviticus 25:38, Leviticus 25:55, Leviticus 26:13, Numbers 15:41, Deuteronomy 5:6.) Rather than refer to Himself as the Creator of heavens and earth (which He is) or the Captain of the hosts of heaven (which He also is) God repeatedly reminded them of a momentous event, in their own lives during which they had personally seen His Power.

The works of God in your life have not been nebulous.  You are not unclear of His power; you’ve experienced Him move mountains and create ways where there was none.  As you pray, remind God and yourself of who He is.   “He that cometh to God must believe (a) that He is, and (b) that He is a Rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6) Prayer is not guess work, it is faith AT work!

Pause and remember what God has done in your past, it will strengthen your faith for the future. Our current problems shrink when we remember who God is, what He can do and the fact that He delights in doing the impossible for YOU.

Reflect:

  • How has God answered your prayers in the past?
  • What do you desire for your future?

Prayer: Father I thank you for all that you, all that you’ve done and all that you will do in my life. You have always been my refuge and strength. I will not be afraid for I know You are fighting for me.
