The True GOAT

“He must become greater; I must become less” John 3:30
Recently Stephen Curry achieved a milestone in his basketball career. Surpassing Ray Allen’s record for the most three point shots, Steph was dubbed the GOAT, or the greatest of all time. Curry himself has openly admitted to relying on his faith as a vehicle for achieving greatness. For the rest of us- with or without hoop dreams, it begs the question: what does it really take to be great?
In chapter 3 of the book of John, John the Baptist is approached by his disciples who notify him about Jesus’s increasing notoriety. Because both Jesus and John were baptizing people, it appeared to the disciples that there may have been a competition underway. John clears up any speculation by affirming that it is Jesus who is to become greater and that he merely exists to make way for Him.
If we are going to become greater in 2022, we must acknowledge that greater starts with Jesus. In all of our endeavours we must acknowledge that our purpose is to make way for the Lord even while we strive to introduce others to Him. As such, any attention we get must be redirected back to our Lord. Rather than fixating on the lack of followers backing our initiatives or our personal ministries, we ought to be intentional about exalting Jesus. In this way, we will focus our efforts on pointing back to Jesus in everything we do, because we are not contending for the praise that solely belongs to Him.
For this reason our mentality, our attitudes and our actions must say IT’S ALL ABOUT JESUS. By establishing Him as the main “thing”, get our priorities right. We do not get caught up in the accolades or spend time going after what was not meant for us. Rather we dedicate ourselves to being great at making His name known and doing what is required as witnesses.
Jesus is the true GOAT, and we can only become greater when we put Him first in our lives.
Reflection
Does your desire to be greater come from the desire to make Jesus known? What are some greater ways you can make Jesus known this year?
Prayer
Father God, thank You for allowing me to cross over into 2022. I believe that this year there is greater in store for me. God, I submit all of my plans to You and say You must become greater, I must become less. May others know that my greatness comes from You. In Jesus name, Amen.
