“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen” Romans 1:20
It happens to all of us. We easily justify staying indoors and normalize being glued to our screens. Our attention is easily captured by different social media networks and the latest apps. Although these innovations were designed to connect us with others more easily, it’s ironic that they can serve to isolate us from our surroundings. If we ever let ourselves pull away, we might truly begin to appreciate the beauty that comes from connecting with the world at large.
In chapter 1 of the book of Romans, Paul addresses the people by telling them about the different ways God has revealed Himself. All of nature is a product of His handiwork and showcases His eternal power and divinity. While some people may come to believe through personal encounters, others have heard the gospel preached through evangelists. However the revelation occurs, Paul tells them that men are without excuse (v.20). By just taking a look at your surroundings, you can see evidence of the God who is Creator of the world.
Often we want God to reveal Himself to us, and we spend time earnestly seeking Him for that ground-breaking revelation. It could be through a dream, a sign or even a specific request we want Him to grant. Yet, we often overlook one of the greatest revelations which speak to His people everyday – nature. Through nature, we are reminded about God’s sovereignty because He alone designed all of creation and fixed it in place. Nature offers some of the greatest sights we could ever behold and thankfully, this beauty is accessible to everyone. It doesn’t always require much effort to interact with either. All we have to do is look up.
Acknowledging that God created the trees, waters, land and everything else, really points to the fact that God is omnipresent. It’s hard not to be in awe as we consider how God perfectly fastened every detail of creation to show us just who He is. The Psalmist affirms this sentiment when he says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands”. In essence, God’s glory always surrounds us. If you ever need to be reminded, take a walk through some of His creations. Even when we are at a loss for words, nature will always testify.
Reflection
How can you find ways to interact with creation? When was the last time you went for a walk in the great outdoors?
Prayer
Father God, thank You for revealing Yourself to us everyday. I am grateful for all of creation and I marvel at the works of Your hands. May I continue to spend time admiring nature as I worship You. In Jesus name, Amen.
