Sermon Title: “I Got the Power” (Click Here to watch the Full Sermon)
Scripture Reading: Genesis 1:26
Pastor Richard Brown
All creation displays God’s design, power and goodness. But only human beings are said to be made in the image of God. As we talk about faith, we have to understand that we’ve got the power. We’ve got the power! Every person alive is designed with something just like God. As we submit and surrender more and more in His likeness, we are becoming more like Him.
Consider two truths. Every human is a special being. God’s word says that we are special. We are a product of God’s created power. Not a random evolution. We didn’t evolve through a single celled organism over the course of millions of years. Man was formed out of the dust of the earth and God personally blew His life force ruach – spirit into man and man became a living soul. The greatest danger to evolution is that if people can believe that humanity is a product of random selection, then we’ve lost the specialness and distinctiveness that God intended for us. I will praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. We are God’s masterpiece, His greatest accomplishment. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, are doing or the mistakes you’ve made – there’s good news today – you are God’s masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10).
Every human is a spiritual being. We were made in the image of God. When you look at man you see God. It doesn’t mean that God has features. When God refers to us, He speaks to us in human terms but God is spirit. So talking about creation, we are talking about the spirit. God is a triune being. God the Father, Son and Spirit. Man – body, mind, and spirit. Every human being has an intellect, will and emotion like God.
Our body is the vehicle through which we move and interact with the world. But our bodies are decaying. We will soon return to the dust. The soul is the seat of the will, the character, intellect, thoughts and emotions. When we speak of our mind, we are speaking of our soul. Our soul is that part of us that makes us who we are, it makes us self-conscious. The soul makes us self-conscious and world-conscious.
Then we come to the spirit – the spirit makes us God-conscious. Every man born into this world is born into it spiritually dead because of Adam’s sin. After salvation, our spirit comes to life and then it transforms the soul and controls the body. These changes demonstrate themselves in the actions of our body. We spend so much time on this dirt that is decaying. We focus so much on it and oftentimes our spirit is dead. Focus on your spirit because it makes you God-conscious. Man was created to exercise power and to demonstrate 3 things:
The ability to manage, supervise and direct – all at our own discretion.
We have been given the ability to manage our world, supervise our world and direct our steps – we’ve been given autonomy – we’ve been given dominion. In the hebrew dominion means radah which means to subjugate, control, comprehend and hold under. God’s intention was to extend His rulership from the unseen to the seen. Let us make man in our image according to our likeness. What does this verse represent?
God intends for us to have power. He calls for dominion. If we will be who God has designed us to be, we must have dominion. The first thing God gives man is power. Someone say today, “I can manage, I’m not falling apart, I can function and I can succeed.”
This is what God intended from the very beginning. His intention was that we manage function and succeed; this is still a priority of God. In the beginning we see that the man is both created and made. Both words are important.
Creation and made are distinctively different.
To be created, meaning bara – bara means to create – there are many meanings to this word. It means to create, produce, carve and cut out. It is the production or the accomplishment of something rare or new. Genesis 1:1 says that in the beginning, God bara – in the beginning God carved and produced something new and rare – so God created/bara sea creatures and every living thing. God carved the man out – male and female. When we use the term man, know that we aren’t referring to gender but the special species God created. Females don’t feel like you’ve been left out. Created means newness to something, not previously existing – God stood on nothing, looked out at nothing and carved out something. God is able to create something new and original from our nothingness – effortlessly – as in done with an ability of confidence, ability and grace. God knows what He is doing in our life. From the beginning of time until now. He knows the way that I take (Job 23:10). Bara means instantaneous action – it is sudden and immediate. Bara means divine, divine activity – creation is always and only the work of God. No matter how man tries, man is not the Creator.
Made – means asah – to form or to shape, something already created. God baras us and cuts and shapes us but God doesn’t leave us there. He does asah – He forms and shapes us. He makes us into what we ought to be. He is causing the distinctiveness of our design. He was forming a work. Asah means to bear, execute, bring forth or to present. In the beginning God created man – like a sculptor works on wood, you don’t know what it is at first because it has rough edges, but the sculptor begins to shape and he now presents it. Some of us are in the process of asah. The process isn’t over yet. But in every situation, creation or being made, we’ve got the power.
Man is an interaction between creation and made. We have been created to worship and to rule our world. But every day He is forming us and showing us how we may rule our world to function and succeed. The spirit of man, that’s the true image of God – this is the source of man. We were created in the image of God – this doesn’t refer to what we look like – God is spirit. Likeness means nature and characteristics. In our spirit, not our flesh is the grace of God. That’s why you have to strengthen your spirit. In your spirit lies that effortless, supernatural ability.
Mankind is an expression of God’s nature. That means we are in the God-class placed above. The psalmist said, “What is man that thou art mindful of Him? You made Him to have dominion over the works. He has put all things under our feet.” (Psalm 8:4-6) We are above our circumstances. Everything is under. But if we spend so much attention on our body and soul then we can’t hear what our spirit is saying. Dig into the essence of God where the spirit of God communes with your spirit, that’s where the solution is. God gives man responsibility to represent Him on earth as an ambassador. God created Him, carved Him out and formed Him. Then God said, let them have dominion. God has always been a giver, let them have dominion He said. God is conducting a divine transfer when God says, “let them have.” God gives power away. God said let them have what we have. It is a divine transfer of power and authority from the unseen to the seen realm. God delegates management of the earth to humanity. The ability to function, control, manage, and administer. Let them have dominion. In this statement, God established His relationship with man through the earth. We’ve got the power.
Anything that God wants done in the earth will be done through us. Everything necessary to fulfil the assignment has been provided and we have a right to everything that God has provided. Everything that God has assigned us to do, He has given us the authority for. We have the right to manage, not to fall apart. We have the right to succeed, we do not have permission to fail. We have a dominion mandate. 1 Corinthians 3:22, Paul tells them all things are yours. Job 22:28 says, “decree a thing and it shall be established.” Whatever you speak, it shall be established. Whatever you decide, it shall be established. And whatever decision you make it will be established. The heavens, even the heavens are the Lord’s but the earth He has given. The word given is Nathan, meaning to bequeath a gift. The earth He has gifted Nathan to the children of men. Therefore, man is the only legal authority on earth with the power of attorney to act on God’s behalf. We have all the power to act on God’s behalf. We were created as a reflector of the essence, the image, and the dna of God. The flesh is just a vehicle. It gets us from where we are to where we need to be. No matter how good the car is, the car is not made to function. We spend so much time in the car that we aren’t even getting to the destination. Find your place in life – when you get there, God has given you the power to manage and function. It is in your spirit because your spirit carries the essence of God. a good man falls a few times but gets back up (Proverbs 24:16). You will not suffer your holy one to see corruption (Psalm 16:10). Where can I go from your presence – if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there (Psalm 139:8). That means I’m a winner and an overcomer, I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. We have to use that power that we have.
We have to use that power – if we want to see it, we must decree it. Because God said let them have dominion over the earth – He transferred power and authority over the earth – He said let them have dominion. God is not a micromanager. He has created us with His essence, He has sent His spirit to lead us into everything godly. But if it happens in this realm it will happen through a man. If it’s going to happen it will happen through a man or woman. God is waiting on you to get up and rule your life and day and destiny. You’ve got the power to do it! Decree it. God never does anything in the earth outside of man. It’d be illegal. Even as it concerns redemption, when man chose against God and sinned, in order for God to save man, He needed Jesus. Jesus was born of God but through Mary. So the Bible says in the fullness of time, Jesus came forth, born of a virgin full of the Holy Ghost. Man is the only legal agent on this earth. If it’s going to be, it’s up to me. Understand the power that you have in your spirit, because you are created in the essence of God. We must say something! If you say to the mountain move, it shall move! The prodigal son said I will arise and go back to my father, the woman with the issue of blood said if I only touch the hem of His garment, blind Bartimaeus spoke too! The colossal mountain will move when we speak to it. Say something. Because we got the power. Use your power.
See yourself as God sees you and designed you. If God has given us the rights of making declarations, it means we have authority. If God says to Job you have the power to decree a thing, it means you Job are a king and in a position of authority. A decree is defined as an official order issued from a person with legal delegated authority. A decree is defined as an official order or commandment that can only be issued by a person with delegated authority. A decree means that you are in a position to make changes. You have the power to do something about the situation. If you have faith in your heart, even if it’s just a little bit of faith, it shall be done. Decrees are made from a place of authority. Go find your throne, it is waiting for you to come and sit on it, to make decrees over your life and authority. And light shall shine on your path, you shall decree a thing and it shall be established. Not only do you have authority to do some things, then you will have the wisdom to understand the process. And light shall shine on your path. Light – wisdom and understanding will be given to you to understand the process. This is the power that God has given you. By one man’s offence, death reigned. Because Adam gifted his authority to the enemy, he gave away his dominion to manage, dominate and succeed. Much more, those who have received abundance of grace will reign in life through the one Jesus Christ. When you’re born again you become a king and a ruler, there is a king in you. I got the power to reign in life. We have power we have not yet manifested. We have been taking all of the devil’s crap and foolishness. Cowering away and saying God help me. God’s waiting for you to understand your authority. We have the power.
Consider David and Goliath. David comes down to the valley of Elah, the armies of the Israelites are there and they are quaking in fear because of a colossal calamity called Goliath, Goliath, 9 ft 9 inches tall with the head of the sphere, is a monstrosity, he is a giant facing them. David arrives on the scene, and asks one question. What shall be given to the man that kills Goliath? David is saying what will you give me when I kill him. David saw the problem and saw it dead because David understood his anointing – he was anointed 3 times by that point – so when David looked at Goliath he saw a mountain standing in the way of the throne. He knew he was called to reign in life so he went through Goliath – you aren’t going to the calamity but through the calamity, through the valley, waters and fire. We have the power to go through anything to manage, to function and to succeed. David had a vision of his victory. And Goliath was there showing up all of his power and his strength and his might. The devil is in the details. Your victory is in the decree. The devil is in how big and how bad things were going wrong – get out of the details, David didn’t want to know the details, David made a decree. Get out of the details and start decreeing your victory. I have the power to command my morning and rule my day. I have the power to call things into existence. I have the power to thrive. Your faith is telling you that you have the power. We have the essence of God in us. All of creation is telling us that we have the power. Even creation, standing on tiptoes is waiting for a manifestation of the sons of God. The animal kingdom are not sons of God. He came unto His own and His own received Him not, but to such that received Him them gave He the power, [dominion, authority] to be called sons of God (John 1:11-12).
