Scripture Reading: John 16:7-15
Pastor Dennis Martin
Being able to understand, see and function properly based on what you hear and see is critical in this season. As we consider our calendar as it correlates with biblical time, Jesus has already ascended. In this window of time, the disciples are tarrying for the Holy Spirit. As we move toward the time of Pentecost, Pastor Dennis felt moved to educate the people about the Holy Spirit. We cannot dive so much into knowing Jesus Christ without taking time to know the person of the Holy Spirit. Jesus died and rose again and now He ascended to the Father but Christ the anointing is still on earth. The anointing has no person in Heaven it is an ability, it is in the person of the Holy Spirit here on earth.
When we look at the text in John 16, it is mind-blowing. When we consider getting our 2020 in 2021, God wants us to see clearer and understand Him more. With our theme of building for better, we’ve gone through the season of discovery and now we are going through to development. If you received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, the Holy Spirit is inside of you. The Holy Spirit enables us to see. The main ministry of the Holy Spirit is that He is a convictor. He causes us to see. When we consider what Jesus is saying to His disciples in John chapter 16, it may come across as Jesus spilling a lot of bad news – saying He is going to leave after all, when the disciples see Jesus they see hope.
When the disciples saw Jesus they saw hope. They felt the confidence to walk on water (Peter) when they saw Him (Matthew 14:29). They had confidence to feed five loaves to a multitude (Matthew 14:13-21). The person of Jesus Christ, when they saw Him, Mary and Martha they said “if you were physically here, my brother would not have died.” (John 11:21, 32) Come unto me all who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). There is a dependency that we should have with Him – I am the Vine, you are the branches (John 15:5). There is a dependency on Jesus Christ. This is the only space of scripture where Jesus says I need to get out of the way. It is critical for your development that I go. This is traumatic to the disciples, because when they see Jesus they see hope. This same person is saying that it is more expedient to you that I step out of the way and allow the Holy Spirit to do His thing. We have to be reminded of something – when we see how Jesus spoke with His disciples, they were slow to understand.
Before the Holy Spirit came to them in Acts 2, the disciples worked under the authority of Jesus – if Jesus said it, they were able to do it. It wasn’t because of the Holy Spirit fully functioning in their life. What were they functioning under when laying hands on the sick? Authority. You can do a lot knowing fully well Jesus told you to do it. Sometimes when people do things and it seems like it isn’t working, they do it for themselves. Something not working was not an option if Jesus told them to do it. The disciples were able to do it because Jesus told them. In the book of Acts, they functioned under power. There is power and then there is authority. This same authority they might have thought they’d lose. It is expedient that I leave because when I leave He will come and He will reprove the world of sin, righteousness and judgment (John 16:8). When it talks about “reprove” it is using the word conviction – causing you to see – to see the righteousness and judgment as it correlates with the sin. It is through the ministry of the Holy Spirit that He causes us to see. We need to develop and understand what our sin correlates to the cross. The Holy Spirit allows us to see our sin clearly. Conviction doesn’t mean to condemn. When the Holy Spirit comes, He leads us into all truth and convicts us of sin, when the Holy Spirit comes, He will glorify Him – the glorification of Jesus Christ is Jesus Christ after the cross – Jesus Christ the lion, not the lamb. The work of the cross reveals to me about my sin that I don’t have to sin anymore. Sin is no longer my master. For you to see clearly in 2021, you need to move with the understanding that we don’t have to live like a sinner anymore. We don’t have to sin anymore. These are concepts we can’t see without the Holy Spirit. When Jesus spoke of parables to the disciples, they were slow to hear and slow to understand. We can’t be slow to understand. We see the difference in the wisdom and the power to function in the book of acts. We need to be able to develop the attributes of the Holy Spirit.
We need to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. We don’t have to resort to the level of just human consciousness; we have a higher sense of knowledge flowing inside of us. The disciples were slow to hear and understand, that’s why Jesus said it’s expedient that I leave. Because physically here was not as beneficial. There is a level of teaching and understanding that we require from the Holy Spirit. There is so much we can get from the living word of Jesus Christ and the written word of the bible but without the partnership of the Holy Spirit, our understanding will be limited. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to cause us to see and to cause us to move fluidly. Jesus died, Jesus rose again. He ascended to the Father but Christ the Holy Spirit is here with us. God wants us to see through the illumination of the Holy Spirit. We don’t have to sin anymore. We are justified through the work of the cross. Because of the Holy Spirit we don’t have to sin. When the urges come, we don’t have to comply. Sin doesn’t have to be our master.
The Holy Spirit convicts us of righteousness. When we receive the Holy Spirit, we become the righteousness of God. Certain habits are hard to break. Some of us have to be delivered from certain thinking. Now our developed thought is this, we will make mistakes at times but we’ve developed a mindset that our righteousness is as filthy rags, and that if we say we have no sin then we are not speaking the truth, but there is remedy for that by developing a frame of thinking that we are the righteousness of God through the Holy Spirit on account of Jesus Christ walking the walk we couldn’t. We don’t aim for righteousness to be justified by God – that happened with Jesus – we do this because we know we don’t have to sin anymore. The righteousness of God is applied to us – imputed righteousness. Getting your 2020 in 2021 means being able to see clearly. The Holy Spirit is a convictor – One who causes us to see. We have to be able to see clearly. This is why Jesus Christ said to the disciples there are more things He wanted to tell them but they couldn’t bear them now.
And, He also convicts us of judgment because the prince of this world is already condemned (John 16:11). Meaning, the devil has already lost. Whatever thought process He puts in your mind, pay no thought. Let God be true and let every other word be a liar. Don’t allow what the devil whispers in your ear to override what God says to you. We’re already victorious over the devil. We are already victors. There is no battle that you should be fighting. It is through the Holy Spirit we are able to see these things. This is why Jesus said, it is expedient I leave. When I come, the hHoly Spirit will come, He will teach you things and bring remembrance. The Holy Spirit wants to show you things about your life. He wants to teach. Pray towards Him, believe God for the infilling of the Holy Spirit. The disciples were slow to see and slow to understand but when they saw the Holy Spirit, look how their whole demeanour changed. The bible says in verse 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” They couldn’t receive it then due to the lack of the Holy Spirit. There are some things we are supposed to possess but because we lack the Holy Spirit, we can’t bear it. Imagine what your life would be like if you allowed the Holy Spirit to function fluidly in your life? Imagine where you might be at right now except you can’t bear it without the Holy Spirit. There are some things God wants to show you and give you that you can’t bear now because you lack the Holy Spirit and as a result, the power, the love and the soundness of mind. When we lack the Holy Spirit, we lack soundness of mind, self control and proper Christian sanity. Pastor Dennis’s prayer for us in this season is that we see clearly and see things more efficiently. It is that we start praying to the Holy Spirit and start seeking Him. The most powerful force on earth in this dispensation is the Holy Spirit and He wants to dwell inside of us. There are some things He wants to show us. But many can’t bear it right now. The blessing of God requires an individual to have the Spirit of God in them.
This is the last time of Jesus’s life. He is emptying His barrel. Even though it’s His last moments, He can’t share all, not because He doesn’t want to, but because of the state the people are in. So when He leaves, the Holy Spirit is going to come to bring them into what He wants to show them. We need to be filled with the Spirit of God. For too long because of the state we are in, we missed some of the strategies and insight that we could see. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come (John 16:13)
He will guide us into all truth. It is in this season of time that the Spirit needs to lead us into all truth. The Holy Spirit is a revealer and internal light. This is the problem with us, that we lack the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We don’t know much about ourselves. As we move forward up to the day of Pentecost, there needs to be a cry and a concern for the Holy Spirit in our lives. It is through the Holy Spirit that we get a divine upgrade to see and hear at a divine capacity. Many of our lives are being filled with deception – lies from the enemy and people. But, when we are filled with the Holy Spirit. He shall not speak of Himself but whatsoever He shall hear He will speak of. The Holy Spirit is not doing His own thing.
As we see how Jesus functioned with the Father, it is the same way that we should function with the Holy Spirit. Jesus relied on the Father and communed with Him. This is what we read the gospels for to educate us. How we see Jesus operating with His heavenly Father is the same way we should operate with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not going to speak His own little thing. He will show us things. The disciples weren’t apostles yet. It’s when they got filled with the Holy Spirit that they became apostles. An apostle is a builder, they build ministries. Pastors build people – difference. It is amazing to know that when they received the Holy Spirit, they became apostles. How many things are you trying to accomplish without the ability to see clearly? How many relationships are you trying to establish blindly? How many people are believing God for spouses, but what if I told you you can’t bear the spouse, in the condition you are in because you lack the Holy Spirit? It is very critical you fix you and develop what is required in this season of time. Develop every attribute of the Holy Spirit. He is a revealer – a revealer of truth. He allows us to see properly sin, righteousness and even the judgment of our enemy. He gives us our 2020. The work of the Holy Spirit is not only about telling us that there is a demon lurking. He shows us things about us – not people. He is our internal light. Verse 14 says He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. Now everything that Jesus wants to show His disciples Jesus says you won’t know it from Him anymore, you have to know it from the Holy Spirit.
To any individual – if you lack the power and the presence of Jesus Christ, how are you then receiving from Jesus? Jesus said He’ll get instructions from me and He’ll reveal it to you. When I’m gone and the Holy Spirit comes, He will teach you things and you will understand. The Holy Spirit is here. Christ died and rose again. He ascended to the Father but Christ the anointing of the Holy Spirit is still on earth.
The Holy Spirit wants to be our teacher. He wants to be our revealer. If your perspective on life reflects your journey and not the Holy Spirit, you need to develop the attributes of the Holy Spirit. Moving up to Pentecost, as we await that time, pray as a body that the Holy Spirit will cause us to see, that He will reprove us of sins, so that we may know that we don’t have to sin anymore. If there’s one thing the Holy Spirit will convict us of it is sin – it is that we don’t have to sin anymore. The Holy Spirit is an encourager, He doesn’t tear down. When the Holy Spirit is convicting us of sin, He is giving us the mindset that we don’t have to sin anymore. He convicts us of righteousness, causes the world to see His righteousness dependent on Him and He convicts us of judgment because the bible says the prince of this world has already been judged knowing that we have no concern for the enemy, focus on the kingdom, the devil has nothing on you. He has already been judged and defeated, move forward in your future.
Thus, Pastor Dennis’ admonition embodied in verse 15 – everything that God has, Jesus has and everything that Jesus had, it is the duty of the Holy Spirit to make us possessors of as well. If we want to be a possessor of it – we need this person, the Holy Spirit in our life. As we go towards Pentecost, pray towards the Holy Spirit – asking God to give Him to you. What we need more than vaccines is the power of the Holy Spirit. Pastor Dennis is not downgrading the importance of the vaccines but the Holy Spirit in every individual’s life is of utmost significance. If we want to function at a higher level in our lives, we need the Holy Spirit. Once we were slow to hear and understand but when the real teacher comes, the Holy Spirit, as evidenced by the book of Acts, will allow us to accomplish so much more.
